Tilde Company is a Baltic leader in language technologies and localization. Tilde provides languages of the Baltic countries with intelligent language technologies that are equivalent to the support available for major world’s languages, using a combination of statistical and knowledge-driven approaches. Tilde’s experience in language technologies has resulted in a number of software products for the Baltic languages, including automated translation tools, spoken language technologies, proofing tools, fonts, multilingual electronic dictionaries and terminological data bases. Tilde’s software is currently used by more than 350 000 users in the Baltic countries – which is considerable given the size of the countries.

Machine Translation
Tilde is developing the market leading English-Latvian and Russian-Latvian machine translation system by integrating statistical and rule-based MT methods as well as by innovative processing of multiword expressions. Tilde’s research in machine translation has been internationally acknowledged, particularly research in translation of place-names. Tilde’s MT has been used not only for full text translation but also in cross-lingual search applications.

Terminology services
As a member of the EuroTermBank Consortium, Tilde develops and hosts a multilingual terminology portal www.eurotermbank.com, providing a consolidated interface to over 1.5 million terms in various European languages. Accessible for human and machine users, this rich content resides in the central database as well as external interlinked terminology banks. Its innovative entry compounding technology enables new links to be established across terminology collections and languages. Tilde is also a member of LISA – the Localization Industry Standards Association and TAUS – Translation Automation User Society.

Localization services
Tilde covers the localization needs of customers for the three languages of the Baltic countries. The localization team consists of skilful and experienced in-house translators, terminologists, linguists, QA specialists and technicians providing services for such companies as IBM, Microsoft, and Nokia.

Digital content processing and services
Tilde provides vast possibilities for dealing with culture related and terminology content in the digital world. Tilde has launched the first Baltic encyclopaedia – a reference and dictionary Web service called letonika.lv, providing most popular education related local digital library. All resources are united by a powerful search engine and content management system. Tilde has a working relationship with over 800 public libraries in Latvia, Latvian schools and high schools that are subscribers to Tilde’s content resources and its search system. Tilde also offers multimedia digital content preparation, processing, storage and delivery, multimedia content search solutions, and unique content data base management. Various cutting edge technologies are used for data delivery.

European partnerships in R&D
Tilde has established successful international cooperation with research institutes and educational organizations around Europe: the Institute for Information Management in Germany, University of Tartu in Estonia, University of Sheffield in UK, and many others. As a highly innovative SME, Tilde participates in European research and development projects financed by the European Commission. These activities cover the areas of terminology, language technologies, information retrieval, e-learning, cultural heritage, Internet and multimedia.
